Brush size, mirror and guides

The right-hand half of the toolbar changes how your tools behave.

The right half of the paint toolbar with its six controls numbered
Brush, opacity and the three guide toggles.
  1. Brush — stamp size
  2. Opacity — stroke strength
  3. Mirror X — paint both sides at once
  4. Pixel grid — grid on the flat sheet
  5. Texture areas — outline each body part
  6. Import a PNG — bring in an image

1 · Brush

How many pixels wide your stamp is. Drag the slider; the number beside it is the current size. Applies to the pencil, eraser, line, rectangle, shade and dither.

Keep it at 1 for detail work. Bump it up to block in large areas quickly.

2 · Opacity

How strongly each stroke lands, from 5% to 100%. At 100% you get solid colour. Lower it and colour builds up gradually as you go over the same place — good for soft shading.

3 · Mirror X

The biggest time-saver in the editor. Turn it on and every stroke is also painted on the opposite side of the body. Paint the left arm, get the right arm free.

It isn't a simple flip of the flat sheet — it correctly finds the matching face on the other side of the model, so a stripe down the outside of one boot appears down the outside of the other.

There is only a left/right mirror. There's no top/bottom or front/back mirror.

4 · Pixel grid

Draws pixel boundaries on the flat texture sheet so you can count squares. Turn it off when you want to judge the artwork cleanly.

5 · Texture areas

Outlines each region of the flat sheet — head, body, left arm, right arm — in colour, so you can tell at a glance which patch is which body part. Leave this on while you're learning the layout.

6 · Import a PNG onto the canvas

Brings an existing image in as a new layer, which you can then move, rotate and scale into place. See Import an image.
